André Greipel took the first Lotto Soudal stage win in this year’s Giro d’Italia. The German finished off a stunning team performance with a very impressive sprint. The stage itself developed as a typical sprint stage. The speed was moderate during the first kilometres and no one took the initiative to set up a break. After the first and only climb of the day, four riders got away from the peloton and the escapees stayed in front almost the whole day. In the meantime, the pace in the peloton was set by the riders of Lotto Soudal and Giant-Alpecin. Eventually, the break was caught whilst entering the local lap of 6.5 kilometres.
What followed was an incredible lead-out by Jürgen Roelandts, as he rode at the front of the peloton for almost the whole lap. He was able to position Greipel perfectly for the sprint and at 300 metres from the finish, the Gorilla decided to go full gas and no one was able to react. He obtained his fourth win this season after a huge demonstration. Arnaud Démare and Sonny Colbrelli finished second and third at several lengths of the German sprinter. Tom Dumoulin keeps the pink leader’s jersey. Lotto Soudal did a lot of work during the stage and these efforts paid off. Because of this nice win, the team already obtained eight victories this season.
